Thanks for making us aware of this, TDF. I'm lucky enough to not be personally affected by the disease, but my Mom works with some kids who have it.

Yeah, you are lucky. But we are lucky that it isn't as bad as some, so... After Autism Awareness month is over, if you want to support something else, why not Downs syndrome?
And for anybody in NEPA, there is a Walk for Autsim at Nay Aug Park on the 19th of April. REgistrations is $15. Theres food, raffles, and you might just see me there!

I'm not even sure if autism is curable. The disease is related to genetics, so the only way to cure it would be genetic engineering or gene therapy, but there is controversy about morals and ethics about the genetic cure.
Down's Syndrome is definately genetic. It is caused by extra pairs of chromosomes in the genes, and I'm not even sure if we have the degree of technology to remove these chromosomes.
A normal person has either XX chromosomes ( Which is female ) or XY chromosomes ( which is male ).
A person with Down's syndrome can have one of three types of chromosomes: XXX, XXY, and XYY.

Wasn't there a discovery about it just recently?

Well, no so far the only "cure" is treatment early on, and then it isn't a cure, but it does help. And I don't htink Downs is cureable so far. and besides, nobody knows exactly what causes autism, it isn't just genetics. Theories range form the environment to mercury in the vacines.

^ You're probably right, maybe genetics isn't the only cause of autism, and I hope that the cause of it doesn't make the condition "uncurable". You seem to know more about it than I do anyway.
Stormburst: I'm not caught up to the news recently, so I don't know.

If I remember correctly, my Bio teacher said that they recently discovered the chromosome defect that causes autism, or something like that. It was around December-January.

Jb, there is no single known cause, and no single "Cure". SOme use a glutton free diet, others just get Ocupational Therapy. And trust me, if they discovered the one cause for it, I would know. Ia m very involved in this for a 13 yr. old.
