I don't normally talk about things like this, so here goes.
This is something very close to my heart. My mother's home country of Burma is located in South East Asia. It has been under the rule of a cruel and barbaric military dictatorship. This dictatorship has more child soldiers than any other country in the world, nearly 70,000.
This military uses these children and other soldiers to attack minorities, destroying over 3000 villages and forcing people to flee their homes. My mother is one of the lucky few that escaped and found a good life here in Australia.
Others are not so lucky as you or me. Children and Women are raped, enforcing their reign of fear. Many starve, many are neglected and many more die because of this heartless military junta that rules my mother's homeland.
I went to Burma in 2002, and it a very beautiful country, unfortunately the land is scarred with poverty, pollution and oppression. But many in Burma have stood up for their rights, Monks, Rebels, Students and everyday people, many of them have died for these rights that are still not within the grasp of the Burmese people.
There is a very heroic woman at the front of this resitance, her name is Aung San Suu Kyi. Over a decade ago she won a democratic election, over 82% of the votes to be the new leader of the struggling country. The Military rulers of the country refused to honor this election victory and instead placed her under house arrest, where she has remained for the past 11 years.
To make matters worse, the Burmese Military is helped by the Chinese Government, who has provided billions of dollars in weapons and aid for this cruel regime. They are also preventing the United Nations from sending international aide to Burma by vetoeing all actions of international mediation.
It wasn't until Cyclone Nargis destroyed and submerged parts of the Irawaddy Delta, where over 20,000 people have died and at least a 100,000 more have gone missing that people began to take notice. These are people who were already poor, hungry and mistreated. Now they are homeless, prone to disease and this selfish and greedy regime does nothing to help its own people. The Burmese Military is killing its own people.
"Please use your liberty to promote ours." - Aung San Suu Kyi
Already this has gained international attention. I wanted to let you know this as well, please spread the word. The more people know about this, the more chance we as human beings can bring about change to those less fortunate than us. This isn't new, this has been going on for decades, before you or I were even born. It has to stop now. Please post a message underneath saying, 'My voice will be heard. The Burmese people will know freedom.' You can make a difference, we are one but we are also many. We can bring about change. Please spread the word, to your friends, your family.
Thankyou,
James.
