Wow, i'd never noticed this thread! How weird!
As i've said before, when I was first 'exposed' to the idea of shipping, Advance was the first major one i came across, and I thought it just seemed right. Because of this, it kind of 'imprinted' on my, like how a baby bird knows who it's parents are.
Like i've said, because of this 'imprinting', every time I try to think of most other ships with Ash or May, (with the exception of PearlShipping, for some reason), I want to throw up. This especially applies to Contest and PokeShippings.
Hope that's offered some insight into the shapeless mass that is my life.
Oh, btw, good to see you here cascade.

Nice to see that you are posting Cascade.
I think I might have already said what made me start. But to summarize it simply a combo of You Tube and "May's Crush" were the clinchers.

Oh yeah, the fanfics were a major factor for me as well.
As well as the fact that the Advanceshippers I could find didn't seem as mentally retarded as certain other shippers...

-points to self- How'd I become an advanceshipper? Youtube my friend. Youtube. And bulbapedia which explained alot to me. Around that time I just got back into pokemon and recieved a new computer, so I was watching episodes and becoming an advanceshipper from the dear internet. And Ima glad I am, because theres lots of nice people, great fanart/fanfiction, I have only met one advanceshipper that flames (I set him striaght though), and the ships totally cute!

I figured out why we like Advanceshipping... it's still a theory but please listen , the first thing that actually attracted Advanceshippers... Color... still don't get it? the eye soothing blend of the colors red and blue, along with the black in both characters clothing, made our brains think "the two belong together" that along with the daily exposure to episodes programmed the brain to set them as a pair... after prolonged exposure we no longer needed the colors to label themas a pair...
but if this is true or not...I still like advance shipping... Thanks for listening er... reading....

I guess seeing as it is Red and blue. But then again Contestshipping is Red and Green... Not as catchy, you make a good point.
Altough htis would be more on a subliminal level. But I won't see it as all that strong a reason to support the ship, especially when May in her emerald outfit isn't all that monochromatic, and how most of us here prefer that outfit.

There are a few reasons for me.
1) May seems to have stronger characterization. This is just my own observation, but it seems like there is more depth to her personality then Misty. Perhaps this is because we've seen her interact with brothers, parents, and rivals. She has more back story, and we get to see her growth from someone who has trouble giving simple battle commands to someone who does well in both battling and contests against people who have been trainers a lot longer than she has.
Compare that to Misty who uses a single Pokemon type and started with almost no Pokemon and an extreme lack of team diversity even when you ignore them all being the same type (Staryu, Starmie, two Pokemon that can only be used when surrounded by a large body of water, and a pokemon that relies on being beaten up to be useful...which that plot device got old quickly anyways)
I can't comment on Dawn though since I've seen almost none of her.
2) May's personality and her dynamic with Ash.
Misty did have her cute moments, but for the most part she was a tomboy who argued with Ash in fairly predictable ways. There isn't anything really wrong with that, but May's interactions with him are usually a lot more diverse, and when they do argue, it can be funny in an amusing sort of way XD
I like her being more feminine. She adores romantic things and dresses up in all kinds of outfits. I think Ash would have more fun hanging around her. Of course, I'm sure he'd have some fun with Misty too. I'm not denying that he thinks of her as a very close friend or anything.
3) Advanceshipping being uncommon compared to other pairings.
I won't lie, I do like to go for the less common ones (though it isn't the sole factor). Pokeshipping and Contestshipping both have a massive fan base. In my opinion, a common trend with pairings that popular is to be lazy when it comes to romantic development in fanfiction (see my next point for more), or to overemphasize the significance of canon hints.
4) In a fanfiction sense, the pairing would generally require more time and development.
I'm thinking of Pokeshipping in particular here. Between the 2nd movie, certain Pokemon episodes, and the old school soundtrack which has Misty singing a song about how she is in love with Ash...well, one side is generally accounted for. What I mean by this is, Misty is already *in love* with Ash, therefore people take the all too simple step of making Ash suddenly share those feelings (I think I pointed this out in my Naruto x Shizune thread...)
However, with Advanceshipping, while one could argue that there is ~something~ between Ash and May, or that there is great potential, or whatever else...I don't think many can make the jump to saying one is in love with the other. A crush, sure. I can definitly accept that. And the point of this is: people need to do more work in a fanfiction story when they keep that in mind. It makes for a better story, and when they've finally reached that point, the relationship tends to look stronger and have more depth in comparison to those previously mentioned rushed works.
Though now I need to give a disclaimer and say: Ash and Misty is still a perfectly valid pairing, and there *are* authors out there who don't fall prey to those problems. They are able to make an excellent story with well-thought out romantic development.
...but I still like Advanceshipping more.
5) Equals.
I'm sure many supporters of other pairings would disagree with me here, but when I think of Ash and Misty as Pokemon trainers, I don't really see equality. I'm sure Misty can beat Ash if it were purely water Pokemon being used, but from the start of the series to where it is now, I haven't seen anything close to the growth May has shown from her.
Let's think of a double battle, because two evil-generic-villains are ready to fight. On land, some of Misty's Pokemon lose points in usefulness. As well, if they use primarily types that water doesn't do so well against, well...
I realize type disadvantages can be overcome, but all things considered, I think May would be more helpful because of her team diversity.
Another factor is contest training. May has training in standard battles as well as contest training. Why does that matter? Because some bits might call for 100% accuracy, manipulating a move to produce an effect which is outside of the box, precise timing.
Ash is known for coming up with all kinds of great strategies on a whim, ones which are really unconventional. May would be capable of the same. I have no doubt that they would make a better tag team.
6) May is hawt.
You can not deny this.
Those are a few points about why I like Advanceshipping.

Why did I become an Advanceshipper? I think Ash and May 'fit' more, like they're on the same level of training. It was the first ship I really 'saw', and I liked it, so I latched on.
Also, I just find Misty really snappy. She always seemed to be either blabbing about water Pokemon, or making some snappish remark. It kinda made me think that she considered herself 'better'.

Was a fan of pokemon when it first came to Denmark. watched the anime and played the games. lost interest in it when they stopped sending any episodes (they stopped when they had showed a couple of episodes of the orange islands/league or whatever it's called.
Then one day I was just looking at some random stuff at youtube, saw something with Ash and May (they'd started to send the AG of pokemon, and I didn't watch it too much.) I watched the small amv, was a bunch of pictures with a cascada song to it.
I watched it again and again, not because of the ship, didn't know what it was called when I saw it, but because of the music. But slowly I began to think more and more about Ash and May being a couple. Watched other amv's, read some fanfics and watched some forums, but didn't join, don't know why.
Since then I've searched the internet for fanart, fanfics and forums, and got so many ides for my own fics. but I've only started recently to write them. So far I've finished the first chapter of a longer story, and nearly finished the prologue of another one. But I don't dare to publish them since that would be the first time ever, and it might be a little too bold to start with a long story, so I'm improving those two. Would also like someone to read them first to give me a little advice, not correcting every little mistake, but just giving some advice. So I'm also working on a one-shot right now.
That's how I got to be an advanceshipping fanatic

It was the first ship I had heard of from bulbapedia and youtube and after looking at the other ships Advanceshipping had hints from both Ash and May other then the one-sided ships like Pokeshipping. Plus my hatred of Drew made sure I wasnt a Contestshipper. Plus the age difference isnt so far apart like Pearlshipping. After seeing the 9th movie it just made me support Advanceshipping even more

I was on YouTube, typing in Pokemon, and some random thing came up on Ash and May. I became very curious and clicked on it. I noticed all the signs of them liking each other and the fan art was fantastic. I saw that they did make a great couple.
And my friend Gwen was a Pokeshipper...soo...erm...I decided to be exactly the opposite. lol
