Pokeshipping is probably as old as rocketshipping, so the word shipping may have come from that.
There was some article (I forgot what and where) that said the word shipping came from the Pokemon franchise.

OK, time for me to clear this up.
The term 'Ship' comes from Relationship. The concept was something to do with the X-Files, but I'm not sure how. I think the fandom for that came with it.
Anyway, supporters of JessieXJames coined the term, and thus 'RocketShipping' was born. Do you see what they've done there? Rocket Ship. As in, Spaceship? To my knowledge, that was the first major Shipping developed in the Pokemon fandom. PokeShipping soon followed, as did many others.
There you go. Sorry if I come off as snappy here. I'm very tired and very hungry....

Can people be that dense? I'm sorry, I thought the origin of the word 'shipping' was obvious.

^ It is.
I'm sure that all of us know that.
We were just discussing in which franchise did the word first come into being.

It is obvious, but we're having trouble deciding which obvious origin is correct.

Well, time for a better explanation of it, on my part. The origin of shipping itself is the X-Files. However, there was no official term to the pairings or the craze. That was until Pokemon came to the US. When it began, JessiexJames was on of the most popular couples. So, their supporters came up with a name like this; they took the term Rocket, since they were on the team, and added shipping, which could have either come from a play of Rocket Ship, or from the word, "relationship." Then, the AshxMisty supporters saw this, and copied the naming format, and thus, PokeShipping was born. And then, all the ships all got different names, and then, the trend became known as shipping once it began to spread to other fandoms.

^Thus began the world of shipping, filled with flamers, peacemakers, war starters, and the yaoi supporters.=D

Stormburst is most likely correct. That is also what I read from too.

Well, maybe Pokemon will do the same as Digimon, but I hope this time the correct characters end up together. I mean, Tai and Sora should be together, that's obvious. But even though there might someday be a canon ship, the shipping wars will continue. Zutara is still alive, despite Kataang being canon.
