When it comes to anime like pokemon there is a big argument of whether it is better to decide whether or not it is better to watch the japeniese version with english sub titles vs. the english dub. Personally I say jao with english subtitles as the dub was modifiredn to take out a lot of Advanceshipping hints and added/modified a lot of scenes as pokeshipping hints.

Dubs do make or break evidence for a ship. But, I think that most people would turn to the Japanese version of the episode if evidence does appear.

Subtitles all the way, I've yet to watch an anime where the original version was bested by the dub. And Pokemon is no exception. Besides the original writers are the ones driving the story so if they want hints the Japanese version will have them, they loose control once the dubbing starts.

Subs are okay for me, I can read fast anyway. You guys are right on the part about dubs ruining the plot of some stories(though i admit the dub of the original Pokemon seasons was good).

The only anime I watch in dub form anymore is the few that I still watch on TV, everything else I download in sub form. Comparing the original voice actors alone almost always makes the anime better in Japanese.
But yes I do agree Dryuu, the original seasons were well done.

I watch it raw. I need the listening practice.

I usually can catch it with the sub as well. Then again if you can understand it raw then you know more Japanese than I do. I got most of the common phrases and simple stuff down but I would still miss out on a lot of it if I watched it completely raw.
But if you want listening practice try what I did one summer (by accident really). Watch enough subbed anime to get to the point where you have heard far more Japanese than English over the coures of the summer. I'm not completely proud of that summer, but it helped me get pronunciation down. And that was before I learned their alphabets.

Did you teach yourself how to do that?

Actually I wasn't originally planning on learning Japanese at all, I just wanted to watch good TV programing. But the more and more that I watched my anime I unconsciously started to associate words and phrases corresponding to the translation. So about half of my knowledge of Japanese is self taught from watching the subtitled anime and the other half is the more formal Japanese that I've learned in the past year from Japanese class (including all the script). I also plan to start using the Rosetta Stone language program to learn even more, so hopefully when I go to Japan someday I won't have to worry too much about asking them to translate for me.

Hmmm... even though the sub is better (trust me, I saw the sub of the 10th movie, and it's probably better than the dub), I have to go against it because they seem to remove all of the hints we're dependent on.

Not really true. They tend to have more hints. Most of the pokeshipping hints were the ones that were dub added

But the problem is that the hints here added against us. One that comes to mind is in the Jirachi movie I believe, where Ash says that he's had a lot of friends and misses them all. In the dub they changed it to I have a friend and I miss her a lot. Obviously referring to Misty.

Also as I said aside from adding hints against us. They take out hints for us. Several Advanceshipping hints were modified or outright taken out.

Oh ya, we all know of various examples of that happening. The best we could do for that is to believe in the original Japanese version. At least there were enough large ones that were too hard to take out without destroying part of the episode. Otherwise the Advanceshipping base wouldn't be nearly as large as it is today.
Just think what might have happened if they took out The Bicker the Better?

This is what I mean; subs can make or break a ship.
