My advice. Tell her in your own way, but Don't wait for too long. Do it as soon as you can(or feel is right. If she says yes, you have things sorted. If not there's still plenty more fish in the sea.

LV, I'll give you some advice. I guess, although I am a girl. Oh geeeez, my grade 8 formal was millions of years ago...I feel so old. But anyways...
Girls like it when you openly discuss it. Don't lie, just don't be to overbearing. But, don't say you are just asking her because you don't have a date and you need her. Be like, 'Hey, I've got a good idea. My eighth grade formal is coming up, and I was wondering if you wanted to go with me...by any chance?'
I know it's nothing much...but I try.
Is she a close friend of yours? Or just... a girl?

You just have to well. Casually talk to her, strike up a conversation. Then after your conversation has gone "down hill" ask her. You know, that is how I gots my "old" boyfriend. So, many, memories. Excuse me while I cry in a corner. LOL

There's one simple, easy way of doing it LV.
Just ask her. I'm assuming that since she goes to another school you must know her reasonable well, and vice versa. Just ask her if she'd like to go to it with you. Don't try and turn the situation into something that it's not. Just be yourself and ask.
