Dave smiled. His opponent had fallen straight into the trap. He guessed that James would want his Vaporeon to see what it was battling, going to meet it underwater. He watched the shadows on the lake's surface as Vaporeon dived, waiting until it got closer, and closer.........
Not knowing whether he'd get another shot at this, he decided to go all out, straight off.
"Quickly, use Double-Edge!" he called down to his Pokemon. There was a bright white glow in the water, where the shadow of Dave's Pokemon was, which then sharply moved towards the other shadow. The water erupted as Vaporeon and it's opponent shot out. The aquatic dog was bent double as it had been rammed hard in the abdomen, its adversary still nestled there, slowly pulling away.
It was a piscine Pokemon, built to swim slowly, yet powerfully. Its skin was rough and rocky rocky, most evident on its head, which looked like a solid lump of tan rock, with a Jaw ans eyeslits. It had mottled black and tan scales on the rest of it's body, with a red spot on either side. Its fins were ragged, unlike most Water Pokemon, but this one was not built to look graceful.
As it disengaged its head from the gut of James' Pokemon, Dave's Relicanth spun in the air, splashing back into the lake, turning to face it's opponent. Vaporeon landed on the lakeshore, having had the wind knocked out of it, as it stuggled back to its feet.

"So, this is going to be Dave's defining moment. I wouldn't have it any other way. Miranda?" She then looked at John with a look that asked, "What?" "That trainer right there, is the one that beat me all those years ago in Kanto. He d--- near belittled me to the point of retirement, but then, I had an encounter with someone who changed my fate for life. I'm sure you know the story... being my friend since childhood."

Vaporeon looked at her trainer. He glanced back at her with a stern look. She knew immediately what he was thinking. 'Not bad, but considering Vaporeon's weight, it's no surprise she would get knocked out of the water like that.' There was not a bruise on her. It was a clean and strong hit, yet there was no marking. Vaporeon as a species were known for their great vitality and endurance. It would take several hits before the damage would become significant. 'Vaporeon use Dive and hit it with Rock Smash!' James ordered. Vaporeon sank under the water with surprising speed, the mermaid like tail glowed a brilliant white and struck Relicanth square on the face. The Longevity Pokemon reeled back, it was a super effective hit, still James knew that it would take more than that to bring it down. The two Water Pokemon faced off in the depths of the lake, neither one backing down.

Dave flinched as his Pokemon was hit. His Relicanth knew no Electric or Grass attacks that would be effective against other Water Pokemon, and with Vaporeon's Water Absorb totally nulifying its own Water-type attacks, he'd have to resort to the other moves he'd taught it.
"Okay then, let's try a Stone Edge!" He called, knowing that this attack would benefit from Relicanth's Rock-typing. The ancient fish barrel-rolled in the water at high speed, patches of skin flashing as his tough scales were ripped away, regrowing instantly, before hovering around his body, pointing at Vaporeon.
Relicanth slowly stopped spinning, and when upright, lunged forward slightly. At this cue, the sharp stones it had accumulated shot forwards, at its opponent. Vaporeon tried to dodge, and a large amount of the stones did miss their mark, but a few of them hit, stabbing against her soft, membranous skin.

Vaporeon winced as Stone Edge hit her. James simply smiled, then scolded his Water Pokemon, knowing full well and good that this sort of thing was only whittling away at Vaporeon's high vitality. 'This is nothing and you know it!' He said. 'I am afraid I am going to have to end this very soon, even before its really begun. But you see, I have a Gym Badge to win.' James taunted, 'Vaporeon Acid Armor! Become one with the water itself!' Vaporeon readily obeyed her trainer and soon, the Bubble Jet Pokemon had melted into a liquid similar to the water. Not only had it now become a liquid form, whilst submerged it could not be seen. 'I'll let you get one more attack in before I finish you off, so please, consider this a freebie from me.' James said with arrogance. 'That is, if you can hit her of course.'

Dave could only think of one way to find his opponents Pokemon, and it was risky. If it went wrong, all the damage that Relicanth had done to Vaporeon would be undone.
"Relicanth, don't attack, but use Surf to move the water around!" The Longevity Pokemon paused searching for his adversary, before swimming to the surface of the lake. Then, he focused, before rising up on a huge, twisting column of water, which formed into a colossal wave that swept through the lake.
When the water settled, Dave looked around. Sure enough, he spotted the blue Eeveelution bobbing in the lake, looking confused, the spinning motion of Surf having separated its denser liquid from the rest of the water. Dave looked over at James. "So, I found her. Guess that means i get to attack now, right? Relicanth, Head Smash!"
Relicanth paused again, taking time to focus his most powerful attack. Ordinarily, Head Smash would also do devastating recoil damage to the Pokemon using it, but this Relicanth had the Rock Head ability. This meant that moves like Head Smash and Double-Edge would cause no recoil to him, allowing him to use them without fear. Now glowing in a raging, blue-white aura, Relicath charged with suprising speed towards Vaporeon, who, having no instruction, simply looked back as the massively powerful Rock-type attack collided with her head-on.

James grinned, 'Hook...' As Relicanth's stony head impacted with Vaporeon's liquid form, Vaporeon's liquid body began to swirl around and around, surrounding Dave's Relicanth. 'Line...' Vaporeon's liquid form began to expand as its constant swirling lured the currents of the lake into its underwater dance. It became faster and faster. '...And sinker!' James sneered as it had now become apparent that Relicanth was now trapped within a Whirlpool. Immobilised by Whirlpool, Relicanth could do nothing but hope for the best. The Whirlpool rose from the waters suspending Relicanth in mid air. 'First, let's use Aqua Ring!' Vaporeon's liquid form began to glow gently as it replenished its life with the water. Relicanth, suspended by the vortex of water could not stop it. 'Rock Smash!' James ordered. Vaporeon solidified immediately and struck Relicanth hard with its glowing fishlike tail. Immediately after striking with Rock Smash it resumed its liquid state and re-entered the Whirlpool. Relicanth could still do nothing as it remained immobilised by Whirlpool. Again the Aqua Ring replenished Vaporeon's health. 'Rock Smash again!' James ordered, Vaporeon reconstituted itself and struck Relicanth with Whirlpool once more. Once again it melted away into the Whirlpool. Aqua Ring healed Vaporeon again. James grinned, 'Rock Smash, let's go once more!' Vaporeon once again hit the helpless Relicanth as it was trapped in the vortex. Vaporeon once more merged with the water. Again absorbing the healing properties of Aqua Ring. 'One more Rock Smash!' James ordered. The super effective attacks were beginning to take their toll on the Longevity Pokemon. With the energy it regained from Aqua Ring, Vaporeon was starting to look better than before. The fact that its opponent could not move to strike it added to that strength, Vaporeon struck it for the fourth time with the super effective Rock Smash. It remerged with the Vortex which was starting to calm. The Bubble Jet Pokemon remained its its liquid state, allowing itself to camouflage with the water. Relicanth floated to the top of the water, it was weak but had not been knocked out. A puddle of liquid formed next to James, it reconstituted and Vaporeon had taken back its original shape. 'I see no point in continuing. This battle was a waste of time. You did have some nice moves, but in the end you're just like every other trainer.' James and Vaporeon walked away, leaving the battle. 'When you get a little stronger, then I'll finish this battle.' He said. James and Vapreon were really leaving the Battle Park, the people who had begin to watch were confused as to why James had left. They were all sure Dave felt the same way. The referee looked puzzled, then looked at Dave. 'Umm... Vaporeon's trainer appears to have forfeited.' He said, 'I guess that makes you the winner.' James and Vapreon left the Battle Park and headed off on their journey.

Dave watched as James and his Vaporeon walked away. He couldn't quite work out what had happened. The force of the votex Relicanth had generated with Surf had re-solidified the Eeveelution, he'd seen it, from there it should have been a clean hit with Head Smash, lights out, Game Over.
For it to liquify again, so easily and quickly, showed that it had been trained to an exceptional level. Dave smiled. He was sure he'd meet James again, and next time, it would be a longer battle. He had far more tricks to show him than his Ancient Water-type. Actually, He still had some tricks with Relicanth that he hadn't demonstrated either....
He looked down, to where his Longevity Pokemon was swimming back to the shore. Relicanth was fine. Dave knew that most Water-types, Vaporeon included, weren't so adept at using attacks that required physical strength, they prefered to hit from a distance with Water or Ice attacks. Those Rock Smashes would have done hardly anything to something as defensive as a Relicanth, even if they were Super-Effective.
He knelt down on the shore as his Water-type approached, beaching itself. Dave swung his backpack off, rumaging around, before pulling out a Potion. He sprayed down his Relicanth, making sure he was feeling better. Aside from a few chipped scales, which was mostly down to using Stone Edge rather than being hit with Rock Smash, the Longevity Pokemon was fighting fit.
"Good job buddy, you did well. We'll show that guy next time, okay?" He reassured his Pokemon. Relicanth nodded. Dave then picked up the Dive Ball, recalling Relicanth with a dark-blue beam, before minimizing it, and re-attaching it to his belt. He then stood up, and walked back to where Miranda, John and the Pokemon were waiting, Yanmega flying down to land on his head again.
"Well, that was fun while it lasted." He said, "So, it's getting late, the sun's nearly setting. I think we should go back to the Pokemon Centre, then head out to Oreburgh tomorrow, if you guys don't mind of course."

"Sounds good to me," Miranda replied, John nodding his head along in agreement, before the three of them, and their respective Pokemon, took off in the direction that lead back toward the Pokemon Center.

The next morning.......
--------------------------------------------------------------------
Dave and Miranda stood outside the Jubilife Pokemon Centre, waiting for John. They had shared a room the night before, and their companion had slept in his own room. It was now 11am, later than they said they'd be setting off, the couple having been ready since 9am.
"Where is he....." growled Dave, pacing up and down, looking at his Poketch, Yanmega sat on her usual perch on his head. Finally, he turned back to Miranda, "I think we're gonna have to leave without him. He knew we wanted to leave early, and I really want that Gym Badge!"

John was waiting in the forest for someone, who he knew was about to come. Ever since witnessing that battle with James, its almost like his internal anger at him started erupting inside from watching his arrogance resurfacing, something that John wished to never see again. "Why when that arrogant son of a b---- comes here today, I'll make sure that I show himm what it means to be an example trainer."
John then thought about his traveling companions, and how they've waited on him for two hours now. "Go, Alakazam!" The infamously powerful Psychic type then appeared. "Alakazam, I'm starting to sense Dave's annoyance at me. Do me a favior and tell Miranda that he needs to know my story, the one she and only she does know." Alakazam then began to focus, which is needed considering how hard it is for even it to send a message to another sentient being. "I hope Dave will understand... why I need to do this."

Taking Dave by the hand, Miranda said to him calmly, "Well, we can just go then, sweetie. I know getting that bage is important to you." Hearing an angry buzzing sound, the blonde-haired trainer quickly stepped away from her boyfriend as Yanmega glared down at her menacingly from where she sat, perched on atop his head. "Well, you'll just have to share him then!" she said defiantly to the ever-buzzing Pokemon, moving to stand back beside Dave, again taking hold of his hand. "I suppose we can just go now if you want."

Dave smiled at her, squeezing her hand back. "OK then, lets go!" He said, enthusiastically, leading her towards the eastern exit of the city, Croagunk and Sableye following, with Yanmega leaving her trainers head to fly alongside, loving flying freely through the air.
The two trainers, hand-in-hand, left the city, progressing onto Oreburgh.......
------------------------------------------------------------------ A few hours later, in Oreburgh Gate..... ------------------------------------------------------------------
"Rock Slide!" called the large, rugged man at one end of a makeshift battlefield. His Pokemon, a hulking, rock-like creature punched one of its four arms into the nearby cave wall, sending some rocks making up the ceiling falling towards its opponent, who hovered a few feet off the floor.
"You're finished now, kid!" taunted the Hiker. "Everyone knows Bugs get squished by Rock-type attacks!"
Dave watched the rocks fall. He looked at his own Pokemon. Yanmega had seen the rocks, and small movements of her body showed that she'd already taken approprate action. After a few more seconds, the rocks smashed into the floor.
"Yes!" shouted the other trainer. "That's it! Game Ov-" He was suddenly cut off by a loud buzzing noise from all around the cave. From the entire edge of the battlefield, dozens of Yanmega appeared.
Dave grinned. "Atta girl..." he muttered under his breath. Yanmega had used Double Team to dodge most of the rocks, but, as all the copies fused together, it was evident that she hadn't gotten away unscathed. A few scars on her tail showed that a few of the rocks had hit their mark. Dave wasn't concerned, he knew how to heal her.
"Now, used Giga Drain!" he called. Yanmega reared back, a green beam shooting from her mouth. The twisting, coiling vortex produced shot towards the opposing Graveler, turning red as the powerful Grass-type attack drained most of its energy. As the votex was sucked back into Yanmega, her body visibly healed, the scars inflicted by Rock Slide dissapearing. Graveler, on the other hand, looked weakened, most of its energy having been sucked away.
"Graveler, no!" cried the Hiker, as his huge Rock-type sagged, almost unable to stand. Dave smiled. There was more to type match-ups in a Pokemon battle.....
"Let's finish this Yanmega! Shadow Ball into Air Slash!" he commanded his Bug-type. At this peculiar order, Yanmega arched her body into a C-shape, a ball of supernatural energy forming in the middle, before firing it at her adversary. Immediately afterwards, wingtips glowing, she gave a sudden downstroke with her wings, producing two vacuumed blades of air that shot forwards. The blades then looped together, forming a loose X-shape in the air, which impacted the Shadow Ball, splitting it into four smaller balls.
As the blades of Air Slash zoomed towards Graveler, they suddenly glowed red, at the same time as Yanmega's eyes flashed a bright red. This was Yanmega's ability, Tinted Lens, that came into effect to counteract the weakening of a move based on type-effectiveness. This meant that Air Slash, a Flying-type move, would now do normal damage on the Rock-type, and usually resistant, Graveler. Which they did.
The twin blades smashed straight into the exhaused Rock-type, stunning it further, just as the four Shadow Balls caught up, crashing into the stony giant. There was an almighty CRASH! as Graveler sank to the floor, its energy entirely depleted.

"Annnnd the match goes to Dave!" Miranda announced, smiling slightly although she was doing her best to not appear biased. As she looked on at the two participants of the battle, she could've sworn that Yanmega glanced over at her with a slightly less hostile than usual glare, but quickly lost train of that thought when she looked over to see that Sableye had, at some point, fallen to sleep, and was now snoozing, draped across Croagunk's shoulders. "How did she sleep through that battle!?" Croagunk shrugged slightly in reply, before pausing as the Sableye snuggled up more against her back, causing what appeared to be the teensiest of blushes to appear on Croagunk's cheeks, although it wasn't entirely definable in the dark shadows.
Deciding she was maybe seeing things, Miranda turned her attention to looking foreward again, where she simply continued smiling as she looked on at her boyfriend, feeling very proud of his win.
