This is just kind of an interesting thought, but don't take it too seriously. A Pokemon Advanceshipping (or even one with the possibility to pick who Ash ends up with) RPG made with RPG Maker (I don't know how to use XP or VX, but I'm a total ninja with RPG Maker 2003)
Here is how it would basically work in terms of battles:
Four Pokemon can be out at any one time. The idea being that jampacking a bunch of Pokemon into one battle and everyone shouting commands at them all would be counter-productive. Also, no trainer can have more than two out at a time. So here are some examples of the team line-up:
Pikachu (Ash)
Sceptile (Ash)
Blaziken (May)
Steelix (Brock)
or maybe
Torkoal (Ash)
Glaceon (May)
Piplup (Dawn)
Crogunk (Brock)
...whatever, you get the idea XD
However, as a way of keeping battles interesting, there is no revival until you reach a Pokemon center. When a Pokemon is down, you have a reserve party lined up. For example, if Ash has 2 of the four slots taken, then when Pikachu is down, you can sub for one of his other Pokemon. This way, even though you have a lot of Pokemon, you still need to plan ahead. As well, who is traveling with you will be subject to change. You won't always have a huge arsenal.
Also: you can't just take four Pokemon to every battle. Some of them will be one Pokemon at a time with the HP of whatever Pokemon beat you carrying over to the next battle when you've switched. Some will be 2 on 2 strictly. Etc.
I haven't thought of a time line for this. It could be a side story during May's season, or it could take place at present with Dawn, May, and Brock along with occasional appearances from other characters (though access to previous Pokemon could be allowed).
More about the battle system. First, commands. RPG Maker allows you to have a series of commands. Here is what I had in mind:
-Struggle: A physical attack which is basically a standard attack for when you have no PP left.
-Special: All your skills go here. However, instead of their being PP for each move, you have one collective PP pool and different moves use more. And yes, you'd be able to learn more than four at a time...but it could be restricted if one wanted it. Or you could have to equip/unequip skills from a library.
-Defend: Damage is halved from all attacks taken that turn.
-Items: The usual. Potions and the like can be used here.
-*Special Command: This one can be one of many things. It could be a command unique to that Pokemon. It could be something that only appears when you are low on health. It could be a team attack deal that appears when two Pokemon are together. There is a lot of flexibility here.
-Run: Self-explanitory.
Also note that giving Pokemon special abilities can be done. They can either be like the game in that they are automatic when certain conditions are met (ex: Overgrow) or they could be passive skills that can be equipped as you learn them.
TM type moves can be done too.
The battle system would have an ATB bar like the old school final fantasy games (think of FF6) and would be a side-view battle system (again, like FF6). Graphics wise, it wouldn't be anything spectacular. It would certainly be better then the Gameboy color games, falling in somewhere between the range of Super Nintendo or Gameboy Advance. Google "RPG Maker 2003 games" for an idea of what it could look like. Like in the Pokemon games, there wouldn't be much movement from the sprites in battle, save for when there is a battle animation taking place.
Stat-wise, RPG maker is one short. So 'Special' would fall in a single category instead of being divided into SP.Atk and SP.Def. It can't be helped But all the weakness and resistances would still apply, as would some types being based on attack and others on special.
(Remember that this is all in theory!!!)
Something to note is that RPG Maker has a bunch of slots for character equipment. I know in the Pokemon games, they only hold one item. Well...I *could* remove it so they don't equip anything at all, or I could use those 5 slots for something else. Examples of possible slots:
Healing Item: An item which is automatically used when certain conditions are filled (ex: HP <50%)
Support Item: Can have various effect, like gradual HP recovery, boosting the resistance of certain types, protecting against a status error, boosting some stats, etc.
Badge: Mostly applies to Ash, but characters who were Gym Leaders could equip their own badge onto a Pokemon here. For example, Crogunk with Boulder Badge=increased defense, just as an example.
Ribbons: This would apply to Dawn or Misty mostly. Ash would also be able to equip his half-ribbon onto a Pokemon.
Offensive Item: The item might power up certain types, increase offense, add a new move to the list, make Strugle attacks inflict certain status errors, etc etc. All kinds of possibilities here.
Ah, but one thing to say about a possible game made with RPG Maker would be...no catching all the Pokemon XD Seriously, that would be way too much work for any few people to handle. An exception could be made for a few if one so desired, but it wouldn't be many. Mostly it would be what all the characters have already (again though, 4 per battle, and each character can only carry 6 of their Pokemon unless they are at a Pokemon center to do swaps.)
But story-wise, I don't have anything (at all) yet because this is something I just thought of on a whim xD
I'd be interested to hear other people's thoughts on what might be in a Pokemon game of this sort. Of course, if it were ever done, it would be an unofficial game that wasn't distributed for profit. RPG Maker 2003 is used by a lot of people, but it is also frowned upon by some compared to programs like XP and VX which were released for sale.
Yup.
EDIT: Here is an example I quickly threw together. Ignore the pointer finger being so low, I didn't bother to do anything about that.
